The Build โ€” May 12, 2026

The Build
May 12, 2026
Actually Important
AI just officially became a services business.

On Monday, OpenAI launched DeployCo โ€” its own consulting arm. $4B raised at a ~$14B valuation, led by TPG with Advent, Bain Capital, and Brookfield as co-leads. On day one they bought Tomoro, a 150-person applied-AI engineering firm, to seed the team.

One week earlier, Anthropic launched its own standalone enterprise AI services firm backed by Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, Hellman & Friedman, Apollo, GIC, and Sequoia. Capgemini, Bain & Co., and McKinsey are all in on DeployCo. Accenture pulled in $2.7B in generative AI revenue and $5.9B in bookings last fiscal year. The Big Four are hiring "AI deployment engineers" by the thousands.

The pattern is unmistakable: the companies that build the models are now investing billions to help customers use them.

That's because the model isn't the product anymore. The model is a commodity โ€” you, your competitor, and Coca-Cola all call the same Claude or GPT API today. What's not a commodity: which workflow to point it at, how to wire it into your data, how to design the guardrails, how to get your team to trust the output. The value moved downstream โ€” to services.

Whether you sell software, sell expertise, or run any kind of business, this is the most actionable signal in AI right now. Detail in the sections below.
Tools & Releases
This week's picks lean toward what helps you actually deploy AI inside a business โ€” not just chat with it.

OpenAI DeployCo
The story of the week. A standalone consulting firm under the OpenAI umbrella, focused on enterprise rollouts. Worth tracking because it telegraphs where OpenAI's roadmap is going โ€” and because their playbook (diagnostic โ†’ priority workflows โ†’ build โ†’ deploy) is one you can lift wholesale for your own clients. Read the announcement.

Anthropic's Enterprise AI Services Firm
Launched May 4 โ€” one week before DeployCo โ€” backed by Blackstone, Goldman Sachs, Hellman & Friedman, Apollo, General Atlantic, GIC, and Sequoia. Applied AI engineers from Anthropic embed alongside the firm's team to ship Claude inside core business operations. If you want to see what "AI consulting" looks like done well, study how Anthropic positions this vs. how OpenAI is positioning DeployCo โ€” they're competing on the same ground now. Read the announcement.

Claude Code agent view (background sessions)
Shipped May 11 in Claude Code 2.1.139. Hand Claude a multi-hour job (code audit, content batch, data cleanup), background the session with Ctrl+B, and walk away. The most "Forward Deployed Engineer in a box" feature of the year, and the kind of capability you'd otherwise pay $200/hr for a contractor to babysit. Changelog.

Custom Apps in ChatGPT (MCP)
OpenAI's renamed-and-expanded connectors framework. Build your own ChatGPT-to-anything bridge using the Model Context Protocol โ€” no backend required. If your team lives in Notion, Airtable, or your CRM, you can wire it to ChatGPT in an afternoon โ€” exactly the kind of high-leverage integration work DeployCo will charge enterprises six figures for. If You're Getting Started
Translate the services-play shift into your business this week.

You don't need to start an AI consulting firm to benefit from this signal. Pick whichever of these matches your business and act on it:

If you sell a product (SaaS, e-commerce, anything subscription):
Customers increasingly want a services layer on top โ€” onboarding, integration, customization, training. Stop treating "implementation" as an annoying after-sale chore. Package it. Price it separately. It's quietly becoming the highest-margin line in your business. Even Zoom and HubSpot now have paid implementation tiers.

If you sell services (agency, consulting, freelance, coaching):
AI just became your wedge into every enterprise account you've ever chased. Every CEO is asking "what do I do with AI?" right now. The first person who can credibly answer and ship one working workflow wins the next 12 months. You don't need to be a model expert โ€” you need to be the person who turns AI into a deployed result.

If you sell expertise (course creator, advisor, fractional exec):
Build 3โ€“5 repeatable AI-deployment templates (lead qualification, support triage, content ops, sales follow-up, internal knowledge search). Each one is a $5kโ€“$15k engagement you can deliver in a week. That's your new revenue line.

The summary: don't try to be the next Anthropic. Be the person who deploys Anthropic for the 30-person business across town.
Noise to Ignore
AI lab valuations. Anthropic implied at $1.4T, DeployCo at $14B post-money, every model lab raising another $5B. Interesting if you're investing. Changes nothing about what you ship this week.

"AGI by 2027/2028" predictions. One executive says yes, another says no. Both are unfalsifiable until they're not. Whatever happens in 2028, the AI sitting on your laptop right now is enough to transform your operations today.
Opportunity Spotted
Write your one-page "DeployCo offering" this week.

Even if you have no plans to start a consulting business. This exercise will sharpen your thinking on AI more than reading another think-piece.

The prompt: a 30-person business owner walks into your office Monday morning and says, "I have a $10k budget and one quarter to roll out AI. What do you build me?"

Write the one-page answer. Just 5โ€“7 bullets:

1. The single workflow you'd attack first (highest-pain, lowest-risk)
2. The model and tools you'd use
3. The data they'd need to give you
4. The guardrails you'd put in place
5. What success looks like in 90 days
6. What you'd charge
7. What you'd hand off to their team at the end

This document is worth more than it looks. If you run a business, it's your AI roadmap. If you sell services, it's your AI offer. If you're considering a career pivot, it's the strongest portfolio piece you can build this week.

Hit reply and send me yours. I'll feature the best one in next week's issue.
That's the week. The models keep getting cheaper. The integration work keeps getting more valuable. Pick a side and ship something.
